At Newcastle, Cornerstone Lad backed from 25-1 to 16-1, gained a shock win, ahead of 2-13 favourite Buveur D’Air, in the Grade 1 Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle, under Henry Brooke.
“I knew I’d have to take the bull by the horns – in what was a very tough race. He stuck at it and kept his head down,” said jubilant jockey Brooke.
Cornerstone Lad and Buveur D’Air, who suffered a cut leg in racing, went nose to nose at the line, with the former getting the photo-finish verdict.
In defeat Champion Hurdle Ante post betting saw Buveur D’Air drift from 4-1 to 10-1. Cornerstone Lad is priced at 33-1.
“It was my second ride in a Grade 1 race. I’m lucky to be associated with Cornerstone Lad,” said Brooke, successful for Middlrham trainer Micky Hammond.
